Help for hosts
Hosting from a Windows PC
Hosting needs Ubuntu. What to know before installing it on a separate drive.
KernelMachine is preparing an invite-only beta; no launch date is set. This describes how it works at launch. Join the waitlist
KernelMachine hosting runs on Ubuntu 24.04 or 26.04 LTS, installed directly on a desktop or server PC. Hosting from Windows or Windows' built-in Linux (WSL) is not supported.
Keeping Windows
You can install Ubuntu on a separate drive and keep Windows on its own drive. Install Ubuntu yourself before using the KernelMachine installer. Check which drive you select during Ubuntu setup: installing an operating system can erase that drive.
The KernelMachine ready-made drive image is not available. There is no release date for a Windows setup path.
What the Ubuntu machine needs
- A 64-bit desktop or server PC, not a laptop.
- An NVIDIA RTX 30-series or newer card with at least 16 GB of memory.
- At least 250 GB of free disk space; 500 GB is recommended.
- A steady internet connection; wired is recommended.
Switching back to Windows
Press Pause and wait for running rentals to finish before restarting into Windows. Turning off Ubuntu during a rental cuts it off and counts against the machine. Pausing and using your PC
